It’s been said many times before. But perhaps you haven’t heard it. Email is the largest social network.
Think about it. If you want to do business you go to email.
If you want to reach out to a friend to stay in touch you go to email.
If you want to ask a favor you go to email.
The inbox is the most coveted way to communicate with people.
And not any of those “up and comers.”
Digital Marketing Tip: Collect Email Addresses
No matter what kind of business you are you should be collecting email addresses.
E-commerce? Collect email addresses from those who are purchasing and those who are not, imagine if people who feel like your prices are too high stay on your list for those 20% coupons? Can you see your sales skyrocketing with those email addresses on your list?
Local Retail? (Coffee shop, restaurant, retail sales, etc) Adding a new product or menu item? Running a special? Need to close out the month with more sales, watch your sales increase by emailing a list of 20,000 people. How do you get that list? It starts by asking for their email address. In store, online, in person, what ever you can. Make it a competition within your staff to see how many people can get the most sign ups.
B2B? Seriously, your website needs to be more than a brochure. When you visit trade shows you need to collect email addresses. Not collecting email addresses is a waste of your time and money. Typically sales in B2B take longer, so what sort of information can you provide to people to help them realize that you are the solution provider they need, want, and can afford?
Manufacturer? How are you going to get those special orders? How are you going to find the right employees? How can you set yourself apart from your competitors? By getting into the inbox of those who purchase from you and showing your skills and capabilities.
Non Profit? From Donors to your clients you have a need to reach people. It’s well-known that donors are reached through phone and email, but what about clients, those whom you exist to help? Are you collecting those addresses too?
SaaS or Startup? Collecting email addresses of those who are interested but didn’t sign-up for your product is key. You can activate those users later as you add features or change offering or adjust pricing. Seriously how are you not collecting email addresses?
Agency or Consultant? Follow our lead. There’s nothing like staying on top of mind for past, present and future potential clients. What if everyone who visited your website heard from you once a month for a year, would they know you better? Would they think of you when it came to hire someone?
Don’t just take my word, even Tim Ash and Jeremy Schoemaker state: “Looking back, he thinks [the] notion of being too good for an e-mail list was the dumbest thing ever.”
So the TL;DR (Too Long, Didn’t Read) is Do everything you can to build your list, to collect email addresses.
